Sunburns: Skin Problems and Remedies
As much as sun is the source of vitamin D which is essential for absorption of calcium, an excess of it is very detrimental to our skin.

Constant exposure to harsh sun can result cancer, darkening of the skin, photo ageing and dehydration.
The UV (ultraviolet) rays actually burn up the surface skin and penetrate deep into the lower cells. This is because the ozone layer has thinned considerably, causing concern to mankind. Due to its, the intensity of the sun rays are felt by us as the ultraviolet light is filtered out and the fierce sunlight is more on the earth. The air has become polluted due to the various type of emissions.
Lots of research has been done over the past 30 years on the effect of sun’s ray on the human body. It has been found that it is the main cause for skin cancer. But for this over-exposure to the sun our skin would remain smooth and silky even through our eighties.
The skin that is constantly exposed to the sun becomes dark, leathery, wrinkled and loose. It can also lead to thickening of the epidermis and enlargement of the sebaceous glands in the face, ultimately resulting in acne and pimples.
The ultraviolet rays from the sun create highly reactive substances called free radicals. These damage the cells protein and DNA. Antioxidants like beta carotene and other carotene supplements reduce skin reddening in response to UV light.
A good tan must be acquired slowly. Do not stay in the sun more than half an hour the first day. Increase the length of time daily. The depth of the tan reaches a maximum after eight days. More sunbathing just produces dry and peeling skin. People with pale complexions should avoid the midday sun.
When walking to the beach remember you are out in the sunshine, so apply sunscreen before setting off. Be careful where you take sunbathe - sand concentrate surfaces can reflect the sub back to you, causing the skin to burn more easily.
Use waterproof sunscreen when swimming, as the body will still catch the sun. Reapply hourly to maintain adequate protection.
In one of the nutrition journal, it is reported that people who had a higher level of skin carotene’s suffered lesser skin damage from the reddening of the skin. In a study, where the specimen used doses of supplement, it showed that they developed slightly yellowing of skin, particularly on the face and palms.
One of the problems men and women face is extra sensitive and discoloration. The reason for this is the cellular composition, specifically melanocytes, the cells that contain melanin (skin pigment).
In people with dark complexions melanocytes are particularly active. Whenever the skin is even slightly irritated these cells create more melanin, resulting in a dark area that is tough to remove.
